BATHROOM MIRROR FREE-FORM MOSAIC
I recently finished up a project in my bathroom. I had a vision of sparkling, sea green bubbles and lots of movement as a decorative accent to an otherwise very white room. I could have done something in the standard square tile format but I’ve always wanted to create a free-form mosaic and thought this would be the perfect opportunity. What’s more flowing than water and bubbles!? I purchased and inserted a few round mirror tiles that mimic the “floating” vanity mirror. They also add movement and pick up colors from other areas of the bathroom. I’ve included a few process photos below.

PRODUCTION: ROLLING, CUTTING AND DRYING CLAY TILES

TILES: BISQUED TO CONE 04

TILES: GLAZED WITH MY SECRET SEA-FOAM RECIPE AND FIRED TO CONE 05

TILES ARRANGED AND ADHESIVED TO WALL

FREE-FORM MOSAIC: DETAIL

Meet Jennifer. City Hall clerk and facilitator of small business!
SoPo Art Studios is born. Last week, long time friend and jeweler Maggie Bokor and I became official business partners. The adventures of setting up a shared studio included, but was not limited to: lots of commercial broker calls, negotiating with landlords, wrangling electricians, deciphering insurance policies, setting up utilities, making nice with the neighbor tenant Sandpiper Gallery (after a snafu with the heating and alarm systems) and holding off clients while I sort it all out! Jennifer at City Hall who notarized the partnership was the easiest encounter throughout the entire adventure and she smiled all the while. Thank you Jennifer. Come by the studio anytime! Now, on to moving out of the old studio, into the new and making art!

Every project starts with a conversation. This one took place while sipping green tea and fawning over Japanese paintings by Hiroshige and Hokusai. The client wants something that will enhance a blank wall in her body wellness center. We talk about creating a sense of place, color, perspective, mood and energy. “Earth, sea or sky?” I ask. “Earth, definitely Earth” she says. …and now the sketching begins. Today, I love my job.
